Each #perception is a structural unit within layer-1 which operates as a mini-stimulus-response with respect to a particular pattern of #signals. The #signals may come from a location within a sensory #array, or it may come from another #perception. The diagram shown below was previously shown in the layer-1 description.
> The diagram shows a sketchy outline of the hierarchy of #perceptions. It is envisaged that there would be billions of #perceptions in the array Each #perception is designed to recognise a particular pattern of input #signals and to output a #signal (or #signals) with a strength which is proportional to the degree of match achieved between the input pattern and a pre-programmed pattern of #signals which is stored within the #perception. These pre-programmed patterns are acquired as a result of evolutionary inheritance and cannot be altered within the "lifetime" of a given system. Unused #perceptions are discarded and atrophy during an early learning and adaptation period. Each #perception is constructed like a minute computer, with its own internal storage and recognition, or matcher, program. Each #state is in effect a "snapshot" of the condition of all these #perceptions in layer-1 at one moment in time. A #trace is a chronological sequence (a short term memory) of a succession of these #states. Wheh the compression algorithm operates on the #trace it recognises repeating chucks of material and stores them as compression chunks. The #states within a compression chunk are extraced from the #states of the #trace. They do not need to contain all of #perceptions in the #states of the #trace. They will usually consist only of a small sub-collection of #perceptions - the ones which participate iin the repetition. The #states also include other information from layer-1. This extra information includes the priority levels of the #perceptions, and the #responses which they may trigger.
