SETTINGS

For best viewing set the screen display

      MY_COMPUTER > CONTROL_PANEL > DISPLAY_PROPERTIES > SETTINGS ....

      1200 x 1024 pixels
      256 colours
      small fonts
      maximum desktop area

NOTE: After you have reset your machine this way you will need to switch off and reboot your system so that the changes can take effect. That means you can't do it while connected to the internet. So print this page, leave the internet and then do the reset offline. You can come back later. I know that's a pain but give it a try. You might prefer the new setting for regular use. If you are using your machine with the settings it had when you bought it, consider this ... Would you drive your car around in first gear because that was the way it was when you took delivery?
THE OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS (BELOW) DO NOT REQUIRE A RE-BOOT AND SO THEY CAN BE DONE IMMEDIATELY ONLINE.

BRILLIANCE and CONTRAST

I also find it best to run the screen at a fairly low level of brilliance with modest contrast. The knobs which control these are usually hidden under the front edge of your monitor screen.
      * The white should be just white - not glowing.
      * The background colour of this page is supposed to be a delicate magnolia. (If your screen is too bright the colour will be bleached).

NOTE: YOUR SCREEN WILL LAST LONGER AND YOU WILL GET LESS EYE STRAIN.

The grid below should appear as bars of white and black separated by 14 distinct and equally spaced shades of grey.

GEOMETRY

If the grid below has disappeared, hit the REFRESH option on your toolbar.

The grid is ten centimetres wide and one centimetre high .... adjust your screen geometry.
Most monitors have small push buttons for this, on the front below the screen. If the geometry is out a long way, then you probably need to increase the DESKTOP AREA (see above)

NOTE: Maybe you don't feel like going to all this bother. That's your choice. I felt compelled to create this page when I viewed my own website using a friend's computer with settings very different from my own. I found myself looking at it as if down a microscope. It was impossible to see the width of a page on the screen as a whole. Text was large and clumsy and images disappeared off the right hand side. The pictures themselves, which I thought were really quite nice, were, on his screen very unattractive with exaggerated grain and with all subtlety lost in the bleached out colours.
