Introduction

With hooked finger and thumb - Loch Hourn to the North and Loch Nevis to the South - the sea has tried to steal this land. The fingers could not close, however, because between their tips is a knot of mountain peaks and hard rock. The Knoydart peninsula has, in consequence, all the advantages and disadvantages of an island, without actually being one. No metalled road penetrates this wilderness. If you want to visit it, you must either walk on wild tracks for many miles, or take to the sea.
